
If you grew up anywhere within 300 km of the Golden Triangle in the 60s and 70s, you are familiar with the accents of Lackawanna, Tonawanda, and Cheektowaga, the suburbs of Buffalo represented (often it seems because there were fires occurring there) by the American television channels on our dial. During summer vacation in my neighbourhood, all outdoor play screeched to a halt at 3:00 pm when Commander Tom (pronounced “commahnder Tahm”) and Batman came on Channel 7 (home of Eyewitness news). And of course the snack of choice for Batman viewing was always an orange popsicle (pronounced, in Buffalo, “ahrange papsicle.”)
