For a glass artist, the worst day begins with opening the kiln and finding shattered glass. This medium is very particular about how it is heated and cooled, and even with the best practices, sometimes a lot of hard work can end up in pieces. This kept happening to my stacks of pancakes during their final slump firing with “syrup,” and it was very disheartening (turned out some of the colours I was using were incompatible). After the third explosion, however, I noticed that the pieces had arranged themselves in the kiln in what can only be described as a cubist composition. And just like that, a new piece of art was conceived. I hope Picasso would approve.
